Postumus — The Emperor Who Ruled Roman Gaul

This billon double-denarius represents Postumus, founder of the separate Romano-Gallic Empire. It is a reminder that Roman political authority was not always controlled from one court: western provinces could recognize a different emperor while continuing to use Roman titles, institutions and coin designs.

Postumus and His Place in Roman History

Postumus commanded troops on the Rhine frontier when his soldiers proclaimed him emperor in AD 260. The rebellion unfolded during a wider imperial crisis that included the capture of Valerian I by Persia. Postumus established control over western territories, forming the regime now called the Romano-Gallic Empire.

His government lasted much longer than those of many third-century rivals. It defended its own territories and maintained a Roman-style imperial administration rather than presenting itself as a wholly non-Roman kingdom. Postumus died in AD 269 during renewed military unrest. The western regime survived under successors until Aurelian reunited it with the main empire in AD 274.

What the Coin Tells Us

Coinage gave Postumus a practical means of paying obligations and a public means of asserting legitimacy. His portrait and imperial titles presented him as a Roman Augustus, while reverse imagery drew on the gods, virtues and military themes familiar across imperial currency.

Billon double-denarii reflect the changing metal content of third-century money. A coin’s color alone cannot establish its exact silver proportion, and this offering does not promise a specific purity. Individual mints and issues used differing designs and inscriptions. The stated ruler, denomination and grade define this listing; the photographed reverse and other specimen-level details are representative.
