Aurelian and His Place in Roman History

When Aurelian became emperor in AD 270, imperial power was divided. The regime centered on Palmyra controlled much of the East, while a separate Romano-Gallic administration governed western territories. Aurelian defeated the Palmyrene forces and then brought the western regime of Tetricus back under central authority in AD 274.

He also began the great defensive circuit known as the Aurelian Walls around Rome and promoted the cult of Sol, the sun god. His achievements did not remove the dangers of imperial politics: he was killed in AD 275. Rather than reducing his legacy to a colorful anecdote, his coins can be read alongside the military and administrative work of reuniting the empire.

What the Coin Tells Us

Aurelian inherited a coinage weakened by extensive loss of silver content. His reign included a major reform in AD 274 that introduced the denomination now called the aurelianianus. This offering retains the catalog attribution of billon double-denarius and does not promise a particular reform issue or monetary mark.

The denomination and metal connect the coin with the practical problem of maintaining an imperial currency during war and recovery. Portraits, titles and reverse imagery carried the government’s messages to users of that money. Individual issues differed, so a specific deity, mintmark, reverse design or exact year is not guaranteed by the stock photographs.

What You Will Receive

You will receive one billon double-denarius of Aurelian in an NGC Ancients holder, graded Ch VF (Choice Very Fine). A specific mint, issue year, reverse design, inscription, weight or diameter is not promised unless expressly stated above.

Stock-photo notice: The photographs are representative of the product offering.
