Julia Domna and Her Place in Roman History
Julia Domna came from Emesa in Roman Syria and married Septimius Severus before he became emperor in AD 193. She accompanied the imperial household on campaigns and received the honorific “Mother of the Camps.” Her visibility in coins and inscriptions reflects her importance in the public presentation of the Severan family.
After Severus died in AD 211, their sons Caracalla and Geta briefly shared power before Geta was killed. Domna continued to have an important position during Caracalla’s reign and died in AD 217, the year he was assassinated. Her life links the foundation of the dynasty with the violent events that disrupted its first generation.
