Victorinus — Soldier and Emperor in the Western Provinces
Victorinus built his career under Postumus, the founder of the Romano-Gallic Empire, and was proclaimed emperor by troops at Trier after the brief reign of Marius. His authority was recognized in Gaul and Britain, though Spain did not remain within his realm.
He concentrated on holding western territory rather than challenging for the entire Roman Empire. After suppressing the revolt of Autun, Victorinus was murdered at Cologne in AD 271; his mother Victoria then helped secure the succession of Tetricus I.
What the Coin Tells Us
The double-denarius—commonly called an antoninianus—had begun as a silver denomination but was increasingly debased during the third century. Billon examples preserve a thin or reduced silver content within a copper-rich alloy.
Victorinus’s coinage was an essential expression of government in provinces separated from Rome. Portraits, imperial titles and reverse types asserted that his western regime possessed the authority and stability expected of an emperor.
