Jovian — A Short Reign Shaped by Retreat and Transition
Jovian served in the imperial guard and accompanied Julian’s expedition against the Sasanian Persian Empire. After Julian was mortally wounded, the field army acclaimed Jovian emperor on June 27, AD 363, placing him in command of troops deep inside enemy territory.
To bring the army home, Jovian concluded a difficult peace with the Persian king Shapur II and surrendered several eastern territories. He restored imperial support for Christianity after Julian’s religious policies, but died unexpectedly in February AD 364 before reaching Constantinople.
What the Coin Tells Us
AE3 is a modern numismatic size category rather than an ancient denomination written on the coin. It is used to classify medium-small late Roman bronze issues whose precise contemporary names are often uncertain.
Jovian’s brief reign required coinage to communicate continuity after a military crisis. Imperial portraits and reverse legends presented victory, security and Roman order even as the government managed the political consequences of the Persian settlement.
