Constantius I — Reuniting Britain with the Empire
Constantius was appointed Caesar in AD 293 with responsibility for Gaul and Britain. He defeated the secessionist regime of Carausius and Allectus, restoring Britain to imperial control in AD 296, and continued campaigning along the Rhine frontier.
At the abdications of AD 305, Constantius became the senior western Augustus. He died at Eboracum—modern York—in AD 306 while campaigning in Britain, after which his troops proclaimed his son Constantine emperor and accelerated the breakdown of the Tetrarchic succession.
What the Coin Tells Us
The post-reform radiate belongs to the currency system created around Diocletian’s monetary reforms. Its radiate crown distinguished the type, while its bronze fabric reflects the changing relationship between denomination, metal and official value.
This issue identifies Constantius in the rank of Caesar, the junior position he held from AD 293 until the abdications of AD 305. Its standardized style linked his authority to the other members of the imperial college.
