Antonius Felix — Provincial Rule and the Trial of Paul
Felix governed Judaea during a period of rising tension, local unrest and strong expectations that Roman officials maintain order. He was connected to the imperial court through his brother Pallas and married Drusilla, a daughter of Herod Agrippa I.
The Acts of the Apostles describes the apostle Paul appearing before Felix at Caesarea and remaining imprisoned for two years. Felix was later recalled to Rome, leaving Porcius Festus to confront many of the same political pressures.
What the Coin Tells Us
Provincial prutot were small bronze coins intended for daily commerce in Judaea. They generally avoided the emperor’s portrait and used symbols and inscriptions compatible with local practice while still naming Roman authority.
Such coins provide a direct connection to the administration described in literary and New Testament sources. Their modest size contrasts with the large political system that governed taxation, justice and security in the province.
