Leo I — From Military Officer to Eastern Emperor

Leo was a military officer when he was elevated in AD 457 with the support of the powerful general Aspar. Over time he reduced Aspar’s dominance and built new alliances, including a connection with the Isaurian commander Zeno, who married Leo’s daughter Ariadne.

Leo supported Anthemius as western emperor and launched a vast expedition against the Vandal kingdom in AD 468, but the campaign failed at enormous cost. His reign nevertheless strengthened the independent authority of the eastern court and prepared the succession that followed.

What the Coin Tells Us

The nummus was the basic small bronze unit used in the late Roman and early Byzantine economy. AE4 is a modern size category rather than an ancient denomination inscribed on the coin.

Small bronze coins placed imperial names, portraits and religious or military symbols into everyday circulation. Under Leo, those messages belonged to a court asserting its own authority while still claiming responsibility for the wider Roman world.
