Aelia Flacilla came from Hispania and became Augusta after Theodosius I was elevated in AD 379. As mother of Arcadius and Honorius, she stood at the foundation of the dynasty that ruled the eastern and western courts after Theodosius’s death.

Christian writers praised her Nicene faith and personal charity, presenting her as an ideal imperial wife and empress. She died around AD 386, before her sons assumed independent authority.
