Trebonianus Gallus — Emperor Between Disaster and Revolt
Trebonianus Gallus was proclaimed emperor after Decius and Herennius Etruscus died fighting the Goths in AD 251. He elevated Decius’ surviving son Hostilian, then associated his own son Volusian with the imperial power after Hostilian’s death.
His reign faced renewed frontier pressure and a devastating epidemic. When Aemilian won victories against the Goths and was proclaimed emperor by his troops, Gallus marched to confront him but was killed by his own soldiers in AD 253.
What the Coin Tells Us
The antoninianus, often called a double-denarius, was a central silver denomination of the third century. Its declining fineness documents the financial strain created by continuous warfare, political turnover and the cost of supporting large armies.
Coins of Trebonianus Gallus carried imperial portraits and messages of security, peace or divine favor. The contrast between those official themes and the reign’s instability makes the coinage especially informative.
