Gratian — Western Rule After Valentinian I
Gratian was made Augustus by his father Valentinian I in AD 367 and became senior western emperor after his father’s death in 375. He worked with his uncle Valens in the East and later elevated Theodosius I following the Roman defeat at Adrianople.
Gratian’s policies favored Nicene Christianity and reduced traditional imperial support for several pagan institutions. His authority weakened when Magnus Maximus was proclaimed emperor in Britain, and Gratian was killed while fleeing the revolt in AD 383.
What the Coin Tells Us
AE3 is a modern size category used by numismatists for late Roman bronze coins, not a denomination inscribed by the issuing authority. These pieces formed part of the everyday currency of the later empire.
Gratian’s bronze coinage combines the emperor’s portrait with official religious and military messages. It documents how imperial authority was communicated across the provinces during a period of dynastic transition.
