Maximian — Soldier-Emperor and Imperial Colleague

Diocletian elevated Maximian first as Caesar and then as Augustus, creating a durable partnership in which Maximian handled major western campaigns. He fought along the Rhine, suppressed unrest in Gaul and worked to restore imperial control after decades of instability.

Both Augusti formally abdicated in AD 305, but political conflict soon drew Maximian back into power. His later attempts to regain authority ended after a break with Constantine I, and he died in AD 310.

What the Coin Tells Us

Post-reform radiates belong to the monetary system introduced under Diocletian. Their radiate crowns visually recalled the earlier antoninianus, but the coins were part of a reorganized late-third-century currency rather than a continuation of the old silver denomination.

These small bronzes circulated while the Tetrarchy advertised cooperation among multiple emperors. Their portraits and reverse messages helped communicate restored order across a divided but officially unified empire.
