Constantius Gallus — Authority Under Constantius II
Constantius II elevated his cousin Gallus to the rank of Caesar in AD 351 and married him to his sister Constantina. Based at Antioch, Gallus was expected to represent imperial authority in the East while Constantius dealt with conflict elsewhere.
Relations between Gallus and the senior emperor deteriorated amid reports of harsh government and political violence. Constantius summoned him west, stripped him of office and ordered his execution in AD 354.
What the Coin Tells Us
Billon describes a copper-based alloy containing a reduced proportion of silver. Such coins reflect the changing monetary standards of the later Roman Empire and the state’s need to maintain currency supplies.
As Caesar, Gallus appeared within an official hierarchy that distinguished junior and senior emperors. His short-lived coinage preserves evidence of a political arrangement that ended in distrust and execution.
