Julia Domna — Dynasty, Court and Imperial Power
Julia Domna came from a prominent priestly family at Emesa in Syria and married Septimius Severus before he became emperor. As Augusta she accompanied the imperial court, received extensive honors and became central to the public identity of the new Severan dynasty.
After Severus died, the rivalry between her sons ended when Caracalla killed Geta. Julia continued to participate in administration during Caracalla’s reign and died in AD 217 after his assassination brought the dynasty’s first phase to an end.
What the Coin Tells Us
The denarius was a principal Roman silver denomination and an important vehicle for imperial portraiture. Issues for Julia Domna paired her image with virtues, deities and dynastic themes directed to a broad imperial audience.
Her extensive coinage shows how an empress could embody continuity across several reigns. The pieces are material evidence for the prominence of imperial women in Severan political presentation.
