Theodora — A Tetrarchic Marriage Remembered in Coinage

Theodora married Constantius I during the Tetrarchic period and bore several children who became half-siblings of Constantine I. Her family ties connected the houses of Maximian and Constantius at a time when marriage was used to reinforce imperial alliances.

After Constantine’s death, commemorative coins honored Theodora as an ancestral figure of the ruling family. The issues appeared amid a difficult succession in which many of her male descendants were eliminated, making the public tribute politically complex.

What the Coin Tells Us

AE4 is a modern size category for very small late Roman bronzes rather than an ancient denomination. The metal is often described as billon or silvered copper alloy when traces of surface silvering are present.

Theodora’s posthumous coinage used memory and ancestry to support dynastic legitimacy. These compact pieces preserve the official image of an empress whose importance was rooted in the family structure of the Tetrarchy.
