Salonina — An Augusta in an Age of Crisis

Salonina was the wife of Gallienus and held the title Augusta while the empire faced foreign invasions, civil war and competing imperial claimants. Her coinage helped present the ruling household as stable despite the rapid political and military shocks of the period.

The dynasty suffered severe losses: Valerian was captured by the Sasanian king Shapur I, and Salonina’s sons Valerian II and Saloninus died young. Gallienus continued to rule until his assassination in AD 268; Salonina’s fate after his death is not securely documented.
