Volusian — Imperial Rank Amid War and Revolt

After Trebonianus Gallus became emperor in AD 251, Volusian was first made Caesar and then Augustus. Father and son ruled while the empire faced epidemic disease, renewed pressure on the frontiers and political uncertainty after the deaths of Decius and Herennius Etruscus.

The general Aemilian won support from his troops after fighting the Goths and marched toward Italy. Gallus and Volusian were killed by their own soldiers in AD 253 before the rival armies fought a decisive battle.

What This Coin Tells Us

The radiate antoninianus, often called a double-denarius, was a major silver denomination of the mid-third century. Its changing fineness reflects the growing cost of defense and the instability of imperial government.

Volusian’s coinage gave visible form to his status as co-Augustus and advertised continuity between father and son. The brief issues survive as evidence for a dynasty that lasted only about two years.
