Julia Maesa — Wealth, Dynasty and Imperial Succession

Julia Maesa was the sister of Julia Domna and returned to Syria after the fall of Caracalla. She used her wealth and family prestige to support the revolt that placed her grandson Elagabalus on the throne in AD 218.

When Elagabalus lost military support, Maesa promoted her other grandson Alexander Severus as successor. She remained honored as Augusta and helped guide the dynasty until her death in the early years of Alexander’s reign.

What This Coin Tells Us

The denarius was a familiar silver denomination used to carry imperial portraits throughout the empire. Maesa’s coinage presented her as an Augusta and source of dynastic continuity.

Her issues document the unusual prominence of an imperial grandmother whose influence linked three reigns. They also preserve the public identity that supported the Severan return to power.
