Faustina the Younger — Family and Imperial Continuity

Faustina was the daughter of Antoninus Pius and Faustina the Elder and married Marcus Aurelius before his accession. She received the title Augusta in AD 147 and became central to the dynasty’s presentation of fertility and succession.

She accompanied Marcus on some imperial journeys and military campaigns and died in Cappadocia in AD 175 or 176. After her death she was deified and commemorated through coinage and public honors.

What This Coin Tells Us

The denarius was a principal silver denomination and a widely circulating medium for imperial portraiture. Faustina’s issues used themes of motherhood, harmony, fertility and divine protection.

Her extensive coinage reflects both her long tenure as Augusta and the political importance of a large imperial family. Posthumous pieces also document the Roman practice of deifying members of the ruling house.
