Maximinus II — Ambition, Religious Conflict and Defeat
Galerius appointed Maximinus as Caesar in AD 305, giving him responsibility for Egypt and Syria. He later claimed the rank of Augustus as the Tetrarchic system fractured into rival courts.
Maximinus continued persecution of Christians in parts of the East but later issued toleration. Licinius defeated him near Tzirallum in AD 313, and Maximinus died while retreating.
What This Coin Tells Us
The quarter-nummus was a small fraction within the reformed Tetrarchic bronze system. Its compact size served low-value exchange while still carrying imperial names and images.
Coins of Maximinus document the rapid changes in rank and alliance that characterized the Tetrarchic civil wars. They preserve the official claim of a ruler ultimately eliminated by Licinius.
