Honorius — A Long Reign in a Contracting West
Theodosius I elevated his son Honorius as Augustus and left him the western empire in AD 395. Military leadership was dominated first by Stilicho and later by competing generals and court officials.
During the reign, frontier defenses failed, Britain slipped from imperial control and Alaric’s Visigoths sacked Rome in AD 410. Honorius nevertheless remained emperor at Ravenna until his death in 423.
What This Coin Tells Us
The nummus was a small bronze unit used in the late Roman monetary system. Its widespread circulation carried the portrait of the emperor even where central political and military control was weakening.
Honorius’ issues proclaimed victory and continuity in sharp contrast to the crises of his reign. That tension makes the coinage especially valuable historical evidence.
