Aureolus — Cavalry Commander and Rebel
Aureolus was a senior cavalry commander under Gallienus before rebelling in northern Italy. He aligned himself with Postumus, ruler of the breakaway Gallic Empire, while holding the strategic city of Mediolanum.
Gallienus besieged the rebel but was assassinated during the campaign. Aureolus then surrendered to Claudius II and was killed, ending the short-lived revolt.
What This Coin Tells Us
The radiate antoninianus was the dominant billon denomination of the third century. Issues connected with Aureolus invoked Postumus even though the Gallic emperor did not personally take control of Italy.
The coinage records how a rebel commander used another emperor’s name to legitimize his position. It is a tangible witness to the fragmented authority of the third-century crisis.
