Vetranio — Proclamation and Peaceful Abdication
After Magnentius overthrew Constans, troops in the Danubian region proclaimed Vetranio emperor with support from Constantina, sister of Constantius II. His elevation created a temporary barrier against Magnentius’ expansion.
Vetranio met Constantius II at Naissus and relinquished power after about ten months. Unlike most defeated claimants, he was allowed to retire and lived quietly on an imperial pension.
What This Coin Tells Us
The centenionalis was a major late Roman bronze denomination and could retain traces of silvering. Its broad module carried the portraits and claims of rulers competing for military loyalty.
Vetranio’s brief coinage is material evidence for a negotiated solution within a violent civil war. Some issues acknowledged Constantius II, reflecting the ambiguity of his position.
