Julian II — Scholar, Commander and Religious Reformer

Julian was appointed Caesar in Gaul in AD 355 and won military success along the Rhine. His troops proclaimed him Augustus in 360, and he became sole emperor after Constantius II died.

He promoted traditional cults while allowing exiled Christian bishops to return. Julian died in AD 363 during a campaign against the Sasanian Empire, ending the Constantinian dynasty.

What This Coin Tells Us

AE3 is a modern size category for late Roman bronze coins rather than an ancient denomination. Such pieces carried official portraits through everyday commerce.

Julian’s coinage is significant because some issues expressed his religious program more directly than those of his Christian predecessors.
