Historical Context
Quintillus, the brother of Claudius II Gothicus, was proclaimed emperor in AD 270 after Claudius died during an epidemic. His authority was recognized principally in Italy and parts of the western empire.
His reign lasted only weeks or a few months. When the Danubian armies supported Aurelian, Quintillus quickly lost his position, making his coinage a record of one of the Roman Empire’s shortest reigns.
