Historical Context
Faustina the Elder was the wife of Emperor Antoninus Pius and became Augusta early in his reign. Her public image emphasized dynastic continuity, fertility and the virtues expected of an imperial matron.
After her death in AD 140 or 141, the Senate deified her. Antoninus issued an extensive series of commemorative coins in her honor, making her posthumous coinage one of the most familiar records of Roman imperial consecration.
