Historical Context
Gallienus ruled first with his father Valerian from AD 253 and then alone after Valerian was captured by the Sasanians in AD 260. His reign unfolded amid invasions, rebellions and the separation of the Gallic and Palmyrene realms.
Despite these pressures, Gallienus pursued military reforms and supported a cultural revival associated with the later third century. He was assassinated near Milan in AD 268 while campaigning against a usurper.
