Historical Context

Valerian I became emperor in AD 253 and shared power with his son Gallienus. He concentrated on the eastern provinces while the empire faced invasions, plague and internal rebellion.

In AD 260, the Sasanian king Shapur I captured Valerian after the Battle of Edessa. He was the only Roman emperor taken alive by a foreign enemy, an event that deeply damaged imperial prestige.
