Historical Context
Elagabalus became emperor in AD 218 after supporters of the Severan family overthrew Macrinus. A teenager from Emesa, he promoted the Syrian sun god Elagabal at the center of imperial religious life.
His court and religious policies provoked strong opposition in Rome. The Praetorian Guard killed Elagabalus and his mother Julia Soaemias in AD 222, and Severus Alexander succeeded him.
