Historical Context
Constantius Gallus, a cousin of Constantius II, was appointed Caesar in AD 351 and given responsibility for the eastern provinces. His court was established at Antioch during a period of Persian pressure and internal unrest.
Accusations of harsh government and conspiracy damaged his position. Constantius II recalled Gallus in AD 354, stripped him of rank and ordered his execution.
