Historical Context

Maximinus II rose through the Tetrarchic system, becoming Caesar in AD 305 and later Augustus in the eastern provinces. He competed for power during the civil wars that followed Diocletian’s retirement.

A committed opponent of Christianity for much of his reign, he later moderated his policy as his position weakened. Licinius defeated him in AD 313, and Maximinus died soon afterward.
