He appointed his brother Valens as a fellow emperor and concentrated his own efforts in the West. The arrangement divided responsibility for governing a vast empire while preserving the idea of shared Roman rule.

Military affairs occupied much of his reign, particularly on the Rhine and Danube frontiers. He also faced disturbances in Britain and Africa. His sons Gratian and Valentinian II continued the dynasty after his death, making his reign a useful starting point for understanding the politics of the later fourth century.

What the Coin Tells Us

AE3 is a modern size designation used by collectors for a class of late Roman copper-alloy coins. The numeral does not mean that the coin was worth three units. The ancient names and values of late Roman base-metal denominations changed and are not always securely known.

Imperial portraits and reverse messages presented authority, military strength and the protection of the Roman state. Valentinian’s wider coinage employed such themes even while the government faced serious practical challenges. Comparing the individual coin’s visible legend and reverse with cataloged examples can reveal more, but this representative-stock listing does not promise one particular mint or design.

What You Will Receive

You will receive one bronze AE3 nummus of Valentinian I in an NGC Ancients holder, graded Ch VF (Choice Very Fine).
