Their sons were Herennius Etruscus and Hostilian. The promotion of the family through titles and coin portraits formed part of an attempt to establish a durable dynasty during a period of repeated changes of ruler.

That ambition was shattered in AD 251, when Decius and Herennius Etruscus died fighting the Goths at Abritus. Hostilian also died that year. The surviving evidence reveals relatively little about Herennia’s personal life or later fate, so confident stories about her private character or the extent of her political power go beyond what this coin can establish. Her portrait remains a tangible record of her imperial standing.

What the Coin Tells Us

The double-denarius was a major silver denomination of the mid-third century. Coins of an empress commonly use a crescent beneath the portrait where an emperor’s equivalent coin uses a radiate crown. Such features help collectors understand denomination and iconography, although the precise portrait arrangement on a supplied example may vary.

The reverse imagery of this series could celebrate virtues associated with the imperial household. These were public messages about order and continuity, not literal portraits of events at court. This offering covers the stated empress and denomination in the specified grade; it does not guarantee an individual reverse, mintmark or legend from the representative photographs.

What You Will Receive

You will receive one silver double-denarius of Herennia Etruscilla in an NGC Ancients holder, graded Ch VF (Choice Very Fine).
