His reign included substantial building activity in Rome and military operations on the empire’s frontiers. The Flavian family had come to power after civil war, and its monuments and public programs helped define the capital’s appearance and the dynasty’s image.

Domitian’s relations with the Senate became deeply strained, and hostile accounts strongly influenced his later reputation. He was assassinated in AD 96 and succeeded by Nerva. The Senate condemned his memory, but surviving buildings, inscriptions and coins allow his reign to be examined through evidence beyond the judgments of ancient writers.

What the Coin Tells Us

The denarius was an important silver denomination in the Roman monetary system. Domitian’s government adjusted its silver standard during his reign, making the coinage relevant to both political and economic history. This listing identifies the metal as silver without guaranteeing a particular fineness or exact weight for the supplied example.

An emperor’s portrait and abbreviated titles can help distinguish phases of a reign. Domitian’s many coin issues also use religious and civic imagery, including types associated with Minerva. This general offering does not promise a Minerva reverse or any other single design.
