After the fall of Caracalla, Maesa supported the movement that placed her grandson Elagabalus on the throne in AD 218. She received the title Augusta and became an important figure in the restored Severan household.

As Elagabalus’s position weakened, Maesa supported her other grandson, Severus Alexander, who became emperor in AD 222. She continued to influence the dynasty during his early reign. The exact year of her death is uncertain. Her career shows that the history of Roman succession cannot be understood through emperors alone: senior women of the imperial family could play decisive political roles.

What the Coin Tells Us

The denarius was a familiar silver denomination through which the imperial household reached a wide audience. Maesa’s portrait and title made her status visible in everyday monetary circulation. “Augusta” was an imperial honorific; its appearance does not mean that she ruled as a reigning emperor.

Reverse designs on imperial women’s coinage often invoked religious or civic ideals and the well-being of the dynasty. Portrait style, lettering and reverse type provide points for comparison across individual issues. This listing offers a denarius of Julia Maesa in the stated grade, not a guaranteed combination of reverse design, mint and issue date drawn from a stock photograph.

What You Will Receive

You will receive one silver denarius of Julia Maesa in an NGC Ancients holder, graded Ch VF (Choice Very Fine).
