In AD 218, her family helped secure military support for her son Elagabalus against Emperor Macrinus. His victory restored the Severan family to power, and Soaemias received the title Augusta as the emperor’s mother.

The position of Elagabalus weakened amid conflict at court and with the Praetorian Guard. In AD 222, he and Soaemias were killed, and his cousin Severus Alexander became emperor. Ancient accounts of this period are often hostile and sensational, so allegations about private behavior require caution. Surviving coins provide more direct evidence of the titles and public image used during her lifetime.

What the Coin Tells Us

The denarius was a familiar silver coin through which an imperial portrait could reach people far from Rome. Soaemias’s appearance on the currency signaled her place in the ruling family; it did not mean she held the office of emperor. The title Augusta was an important part of that representation.

Reverse designs on her coinage could associate the imperial household with deities and established Roman ideals. Portrait details, legends and imagery offer opportunities to compare individual issues and their messages. This offering guarantees the named imperial figure, denomination and stated NGC grade, while leaving the particular mint and reverse open within the represented coin type.

What You Will Receive

You will receive one silver denarius of Julia Soaemias in an NGC Ancients holder, graded Ch VF (Choice Very Fine).
