When Severus Alexander succeeded his cousin Elagabalus in AD 222, he was still young, and his mother and grandmother exercised substantial influence. After Maesa’s death, Mamaea remained prominent in the imperial household and government.

The reign faced growing military pressures, including conflict with the new Sasanian power in Persia and trouble on the northern frontier. During a campaign in Germany in AD 235, troops turned against Alexander and supported Maximinus. Mamaea and her son were killed, ending the Severan dynasty. Her coinage records the public standing of an imperial mother before that violent transition.

What the Coin Tells Us

The denarius placed Mamaea’s portrait and the honorific Augusta into circulation alongside the money of her son. Such coins help explain how a dynasty presented itself: the emperor’s authority was supported by a wider family image, even when those family members did not hold the imperial office.

Different reverse types invoked deities and virtues associated with the household and the state. Their messages should be understood as official ideals rather than direct accounts of Mamaea’s private life.
