Her marriage to Marcus Aurelius connected the next generation of rulers with the reigning imperial household. She received the title Augusta in AD 147, before Marcus became emperor in AD 161, and was the mother of the future emperor Commodus.

Her life spanned the transition from the relatively settled reign of Antoninus Pius to the wars and pressures of Marcus Aurelius’s rule. After her death in AD 175 or 176, she received divine honors. Coins struck in her memory formed part of that commemoration. The distinction between lifetime and posthumous issues is an important subject for collectors, though this general offering does not promise a particular commemorative reverse.

What the Coin Tells Us

The denarius placed a small silver portrait of an imperial family member into circulation throughout the Roman world. The title Augusta identified Faustina’s honored position. Her image was not simply decorative: it helped present the family’s continuity alongside coins bearing the emperor’s own name and portrait.

The wider coinage of Faustina includes varied hairstyles, inscriptions and reverse themes connected with the gods, family and imperial virtues. Those differences reward close comparison between individual examples. A stock image represents the offering rather than fixing every design detail, so this listing guarantees the named empress, denomination and stated grade without promising one exact issue.

What You Will Receive

You will receive one silver denarius of Faustina the Younger in an NGC Ancients holder, graded Ch F (Choice Fine).
