Numerian and the Roman Empire
Numerian became emperor after the death of his father Carus during a campaign against the Sasanian Empire. He shared power with his brother Carinus, who governed the western provinces.
Numerian died while the army was returning from Persia in AD 284. The circumstances remain uncertain, but the crisis led to the elevation of Diocletian and the beginning of a new imperial order.
What This Coin Tells Us
The aurelianianus was the reformed radiate denomination introduced under Aurelian. Its billon composition reflects continued attempts to stabilize Roman currency after decades of debasement.
A coin of Numerian documents the final moment of the dynasty of Carus and the political transition that brought Diocletian to power.
