Maximian — The Herculean Partner of Diocletian
Diocletian elevated Maximian to Caesar in AD 285 and Augustus in AD 286, entrusting him with the western half of the empire. Maximian adopted the divine association of Hercules while Diocletian was linked with Jupiter, expressing the complementary military and governing roles of the two senior emperors.
Maximian campaigned in Gaul, along the Rhine and in North Africa. He abdicated with Diocletian in AD 305 but later returned to imperial politics amid the struggles involving his son Maxentius and son-in-law Constantine; he died in AD 310.
What the Coin Tells Us
The large nummus introduced by Diocletian’s monetary reform was a copper-alloy denomination commonly issued with a silvered surface. It became one of the most recognizable coins of the Tetrarchic monetary system.
Maximian’s reformed coinage helped make the Tetrarchy visible across the empire. Standardized portraits and reverse themes emphasized unity, military strength and the orderly transfer of authority among multiple rulers.
