Justinian I — Rebuilding Roman Power from Constantinople

Justinian ruled with Empress Theodora and sought to restore imperial authority around the Mediterranean. His generals Belisarius and Narses recovered North Africa and much of Italy, although prolonged war and the plague placed immense strain on the empire.

His government compiled the Corpus Juris Civilis, a systematic body of Roman law with a lasting influence on later legal traditions. Justinian also rebuilt Hagia Sophia after the Nika riots, creating one of the defining monuments of Byzantine Constantinople.

What the Coin Tells Us

The pentanummium was a small bronze denomination valued at five nummi. Byzantine bronze coins increasingly displayed explicit marks of value, making their denominations easier to recognize within the reformed currency system.

Even a small bronze coin connected imperial administration to daily life: taxes, markets and military supply all depended on reliable currency. Justinian’s coinage also helped make the emperor’s authority visible across a vast and changing realm.
