Elymais — A Local Kingdom Between Highlands and Empire

Elymais occupied part of ancient Elam in the region of modern Khuzestan. Its rulers maintained a distinctive local monarchy while interacting with the larger Parthian world that dominated much of Iran and Mesopotamia.

The name Kamnaskires-Orodes belongs to the later royal series of Elymais. Surviving coins are among the clearest records of these rulers, whose political history is otherwise preserved only unevenly in written sources.

What the Coin Tells Us

Bronze drachms of Kamnaskires-Orodes commonly use strongly stylized royal portraits and dynastic symbols. Museum examples include the anchor, crescent and star, while reverse imagery varies by type.

These compact coins show how a regional court could adopt the language of Hellenistic and Parthian kingship while developing its own recognizable style. The exact devices and portrait details vary within this stock-photo offering.
