Valerian II — Dynasty and the Danubian Frontier
Valerian II was a grandson of Emperor Valerian I and the elder son of Gallienus and Salonina. He was appointed Caesar while still young and sent to the Danubian provinces under the supervision of the experienced commander Ingenuus.
He died in AD 258 under circumstances that remain uncertain and was honored after death. His loss weakened the dynasty’s plan to place younger family members at major frontier commands during an era of simultaneous threats.
What the Coin Tells Us
The double-denarius—commonly called an antoninianus—was identified by the radiate crown on male portraits. Its silver content declined during the third century, producing the billon fabric typical of many issues.
Coinage for a Caesar made succession visible across the empire. Valerian II’s portrait and titles presented him as a future ruler even though his career ended before he could become Augustus.
