Galerius — From Tetrarchic Caesar to Augustus

Galerius was appointed Caesar in AD 293 and married Diocletian’s daughter Valeria, joining the imperial college created by the Tetrarchy. After an early setback against the Sasanian king Narseh, he won a major victory and helped secure a favorable peace for Rome in AD 298.

When Diocletian and Maximian abdicated in AD 305, Galerius became Augustus in the East. His later reign was dominated by the collapse of the planned succession and rival claims across the empire; shortly before his death in AD 311, an edict ended official persecution and permitted Christians to assemble.

What the Coin Tells Us

The post-reform radiate belongs to the currency system created around Diocletian’s monetary reforms. Its radiate crown distinguished the type, while its bronze fabric reflects the changing relationship between denomination, metal and official value.

Galerius’s coinage made the hierarchy of the Tetrarchy visible across the provinces. Standardized portraits and reverse themes emphasized cooperation, military success and the orderly authority of rulers governing different regions.
