Mithradates VI — Rome’s Great Rival in the Black Sea World

Mithradates VI ruled Pontus from about 120 to 63 BC and built a powerful kingdom around the Black Sea. His expansion brought him into direct conflict with Rome, producing the three Mithridatic Wars and campaigns involving Roman commanders including Sulla, Lucullus and Pompey.

Amisus was a major port on the southern Black Sea coast and an important mint within the Pontic kingdom. Its bronze issues supported regional commerce while also circulating the imagery and authority of Mithradates’ rule.

What the Coin Tells Us

AE22 is a modern descriptive term indicating a bronze coin approximately 22 millimeters in diameter, not an ancient denomination recorded on the coin itself.

Bronze coinage from Amisus connects everyday economic activity with the wider political struggle between Pontus and Rome. The surviving type provides an accessible artifact from the generation that reshaped the eastern Mediterranean.
