Ancient accounts credit him with defeating invading groups and reestablishing Roman authority in several troubled regions.

He also employed soldiers on construction and agricultural projects when they were not campaigning. That policy became part of the tradition surrounding his death: troops near Sirmium killed him in AD 282 during preparations for a Persian campaign.

What the Coin Tells Us

The antoninianus was the dominant radiate denomination of the third century. By the reign of Probus it was principally a billon coin, reflecting the reduced silver content of imperial currency.

Probus issued many varied bust types and energetic reverse designs. His abundant coinage records both the military values of his reign and the empire’s effort to present recovery after prolonged instability.

What You Will Receive

You will receive one billon antoninianus of Probus in an NGC Ancients holder, graded F (Fine).
