Aelia Eudoxia — Imperial Authority and Court Politics
Aelia Eudoxia married the emperor Arcadius and became a prominent public figure in the eastern capital. Crowned Augusta in AD 400, she appeared in official ceremony and coinage at a time when the court at Constantinople was developing its own powerful institutions.
Her name is closely associated with the disputes that led to the exile of John Chrysostom, bishop of Constantinople. Eudoxia died in AD 404 after complications from childbirth, but her daughter Pulcheria and son Theodosius II continued the dynasty.
What the Coin Tells Us
AE3 is a modern size category for late Roman bronze coins rather than an ancient denomination. Such pieces brought the imperial household’s portraits and messages into ordinary transactions.
Coinage in Eudoxia’s name affirmed her rank as Augusta and her role within the dynasty. It provides material evidence for the expanding visibility of imperial women in the ceremonial life of the eastern court.
