Otacilia Severa — Dynasty and Rome’s Millennium
Otacilia Severa became Augusta when her husband Philip I took power in AD 244. Their son Philip II was elevated first as Caesar and later as Augustus, allowing the family to present a planned succession during a period of frequent military revolt.
The imperial household presided over celebrations marking Rome’s thousandth anniversary in AD 248. Philip I and Philip II were killed after Decius’ revolt in 249; the later fate of Otacilia is not securely recorded.
What This Coin Tells Us
The radiate antoninianus was a leading silver denomination of the mid-third century. Coins in an empress’s name paired her portrait with personifications and virtues associated with harmony, fertility, modesty and imperial security.
Otacilia’s coinage made her an essential part of the dynasty’s public image. Its survival provides material evidence for both the millennium celebrations and a family regime ended by civil war.
