Julia Soaemias — The Severan Return and a Violent Fall
Julia Soaemias was the daughter of Julia Maesa and mother of the future emperor Elagabalus. After the fall of Macrinus, the family used its wealth, connections and claim of Severan descent to win military support and bring the young priest-emperor to Rome.
Soaemias received exceptional honors during her son’s reign and appeared prominently in imperial representation. In AD 222 the Praetorian Guard killed both mother and son, while Julia Maesa supported the accession of Alexander Severus.
What This Coin Tells Us
The denarius remained an important silver denomination and a familiar medium for imperial portraiture. Issues for Soaemias used the established visual language of an Augusta to strengthen the restored dynasty.
Her coinage records the remarkable public elevation of an imperial mother and the political importance of the women of the Emesan Severan family. It also survived the condemnation imposed after the regime’s collapse.
