Geta — Joint Rule Ended by Fratricide

Geta grew up within the Severan court and was elevated through the imperial ranks while his father campaigned across the empire. Septimius Severus made him Augustus in AD 209, creating a three-emperor household with Caracalla.

After Severus died in 211, the brothers’ rivalry made joint government impossible. Caracalla arranged Geta’s murder in their mother’s presence and ordered the erasure of Geta’s name and image from public monuments.

What This Coin Tells Us

The denarius was a principal Roman silver denomination and a major medium for imperial portraiture. Geta’s issues trace his progression from young Caesar to co-Augustus.

Because his public memory was officially condemned, surviving coins provide especially direct evidence for Geta’s place in the dynasty and for the images later targeted for removal.
